New York is one of the most desired places for foreign tourists of all possible destinations in the United States. The city of skyscrapers can be a huge challenge, it is immense and there is much to see. Today we give you a summary of some of the things that you do not want to miss when traveling to New York.
Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty
How could it be otherwise, the Statue of Liberty is one of the key excursions if you have never been to New York. Formerly this is the place where immigrants who wanted to get to New York City passed.
During this excursion, you can climb the statue of liberty, even reach its crown. Of course, with the great demand that this visit usually has, you have to book tickets online well in advance to ensure access. Depending on what you want to see, there are several ticket types, the simplest one includes the trip on the ferry to the island, a walk through its gardens, and a visit to the Immigration Museum on Ellis Island. In spring and summer, the last access to the monument is at 4:30 p.m., while in the rest of the year it is until 3:30 p.m.
Climb to the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty
To visit the pedestal and see the panoramic views of Manhattan you can buy the ticket for this activity, which already includes the ferry to visit Ellis Island and Liberty Island. This tour usually lasts between 4 and 5 hours. It also includes visits to the Immigration Museum, the Statue museum and climbing the pedestal.
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Tour
If you prefer, the easiest alternative is the Tour to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis, with four hours duration and a guide in Spanish, which does not include access to the pedestal.
How to climb the Crown of the Statue of Liberty
If on your visit to the island you dare to climb the Crown of the Statue of Liberty, you must bear in mind that it requires considerable physical effort.
You will have to climb the 354 steps, of which half are on a circular staircase with tiny steps, which narrows considerably as you go up.
Additionally, access to the Crown is limited to 240 people a day, so when you get to the top you can only be on the Crown for less than five minutes to enjoy panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline through small glass windows.
The heart of the island of Manhattan, the immense Central Park, a good walk through it is almost mandatory. Central Park is one of the most iconic places in New York, it was designed in the 19th century by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. The park is 4km long by 800 meters wide and has been the setting for many American films. The most remarkable places for you to visit within the park itself are:
- Belvedere Castle, located on a small hill, next to a lake, Victorian style and with an observatory tower.
- Lake Reservoir, the largest, located in the center of the park.
- The Delacorte Theater, where in summer there are free performances.
- The Zoo, interesting to visit if we are accompanied by children.
- The place called Strawberry Fields, a mosaic in memory of John Lennon, very close to the Dakota building, where he was murdered.
- To the south of the park, next to the Avenida de las Américas, the statues of San Martín, Bolivar and José Martí.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral
When you go through the fifth avenue (which you should also visit), this is one of the buildings that will attract your attention the most without a doubt.
It is located between 50th and 51st streets, right in front of the Rockefeller skyscraper, so you do not have to miss (At the Rockefeller you have the viewpoint with the best views of New York!). The forms leave no doubt of the neo-Gothic style of the New York Catholic Cathedral. Its towers reach over 100 meters in height, which today, compared to the surrounding skyscrapers, does not stand out as much as when its construction began in 1858.
Top of the Rock, Rockefeller Center
As we have mentioned before, Rockefeller Center is located right next to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and in it you can enjoy the best panoramic views of New York City. The visit to a viewpoint, a common option among those who visit the city of skyscrapers, and most usually go to the Empire State Building. But we have to advise, if you do not buy the option to go up without queues, it can take between 1 and 2 hours to reach the top.
So we recommend you go up to the Top of the Rock viewing terrace, at the top of the Rockefeller plaza skyscraper. From Top of the Rock, there are incredible views of Central Park and New York City. If you go at Christmas you can see the big Christmas tree next to its busy ice rink, all surrounded by large skyscrapers
Times Square in Manhattan
The center of Broadway on the island of Manhattan in New York is Times Square. Located on 42nd Street, at the crossroads between 7th Avenue and Broadway, it has become one of the most emblematic spots in New York. The name “Times” comes to him because in 1904 the offices of the important “New York Times” were located here.
Times Square is a hub for a multitude of shows and theaters. It is a very popular area for visitors and residents in search of leisure. If there is a show that we are interested in going to, it will surely be in Times Square.
Metropolitan Museum in New York
The New York Metropolitan Museum is one of the best visits you can make throughout your stay on this visit to the United States. If your thing is more contemporary art, you cannot forget also the Museum of Modern Art, known as MOMA, and if you are also interested in Sorolla’s work, you should not miss the opportunity to visit the Hispanic Society of America.
If we asked about which is the most interesting museum to visit, without a doubt, most would opt for the Metropolitan, also called MET. It has more than two million works in its galleries, from all kinds of periods and different characteristics. On the Metropolitan website you can see the references of its more than 450,000 objects exhibited to visitors.
